Former teammate and fellow Stanford Hall of Famer Sandy Tatum provides this recollection: "Bud Brownell was on the 1941 and 1942 teams. Bud was killed in WWII. Man (!!) could he play! For example, in 1941 (could have been 1940 or 1942) he played an exhibition match at Stanford with Denny Shute, who was then the National PGA Champion. It was a cold, damp day with the course playing about as difficult as it could get. Shute shot 72, Bud shot 63 (!) making nine 3s and nine 4s. Bud also shot a 66 at Pebble Beach in a qualifying round for the California Amateur Championship. For a lot of years that was the Pebble Beach course record. If Bud had survived the war he obviously would have been a world beater." |
