Former teammate Sandy Tatum recalls Brownell: "For example, in 1941 (could have been 1940 or 1942) he played an exhibition match at Stanford with Denny Shute, who was then the National PGA Champion. It was a cold, damp day with the course playing about as difficult as it could get. Shute shot 72, Bud shot 63 (!) making nine 3s and nine 4s. Bud also shot a 66 at Pebble Beach in a qualifying round for the California Amateur Championship. For a lot of years that was the Pebble Beach course record. If Bud had survived the war he obviously would have been a world beater." |
